Double Dutch gold and one each for USA & New Zealand on the final day
|
Jennie Reed won gold in the Women’s Keirin on the final day of the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Manchester on Sunday 30th March. Reed powered her way down the final straight to deny Britain’s Victoria Pendleton her third gold medal of this week. Germany’s Christine Muche finished closely behind Pendleton to take the bronze medal. Reed and Pendleton had looked good from the first round when they won their separate heats but Muche had to fight her way back into contention via the repechage as did Willy Kanis (Netherlands) and Clara Sanchez (France). Pendleton cruised her way into final by winning her round two heat. Muche and Reed were first and second in their heat which ended in tears for Willy Kanis who collided with Reed in the back straight and managed to keep her bike upright but her chance was gone. The final was an explosive affair with Pendleton finding the front with two laps to go in a brave effort to hold off the charging challengers and Reed just eclipsed the British girl to take the warm applause from the spectators. It took a photo to confirm Pendleton’s silver medal.
Teun Mulder took Holland’s second gold medal of the championships when he won the men’s kilometre time trial in 1 min 1.332 seconds. Mulder became very emotional in his team pen when Francois Pervis finished his explosive effort on the track but the Frenchman could only manage third place in a time of 1 min 1.579. Michael D’Almeida completed the tough race in 1 min 1.514 seconds to secure the silver medal. Britain’s Matthew Crampton set the early target but had to watch his medal chances disappear in the closing stages and he finished in fourth spot.
Eleonora Van Dijk took the Netherlands third gold medal in a brave move at the end of the Women’s Scratch race. The Dutch girl took her chance to go clear with only a few laps to go and the charging bunch left it too late to bring her back. Cuba’s Yumari Gonzalez Valdivieso won the bunch gallop ahead of Australia’s Belinda Goss.
New Zealand’s Hayden Godfrey took a clear victory in the men’s Omnium. The Kiwi won the scratch race and finished in the top four in the kilo, pursuit and 200m time trial to score the lowest score with 19 points to secure victory over Leigh Howard (Australia) and Aliaksandr Lisouski (Belarus)
Yesterday UCI President Pat McQuaid described the event as the most successful world track championships ever staged by the UCI.
